Best Decision I Ever Made

I came to teaching a bit later, starting my first teaching job at 35. I did it because I wanted a creative professional job that would have a real impact. I’m a Teacher Librarian at a secondary school, and I’m absolutely passionate about the role school libraries have. In a world where everyone is concerned about literacy and PISA results and so forth, it seems weird that school libraries aren’t given the status and value that they deserve. I think if parents really knew what was going on and understood that many TLs are being put back in the classroom and school library budgets being whittled away, they would be really angry. I feel like I was born to be a teacher, and even though I was sick with nerves, the first time I walked into a classroom I knew I was meant to be there. I don’t know if I would have felt that quite so much if I wasn’t a little older than your average beginning teacher. I like to bring some of my outside experience into the classroom and broaden students horizons in any way I can. Becoming a teacher was the best decision I ever made.
